Quick answer: A DIY Umrah can work well for confident, flexible travellers who are happy to book flights, the visa, hotels and transport separately. A package suits first-timers, families and elderly pilgrims who want one booking, one point of contact and support if something goes wrong. Whichever you choose, compare like for like and check exactly what you are paying for.

What does "DIY Umrah" actually mean?

A DIY Umrah means you arrange each part of the trip yourself rather than through a travel company. In recent years Saudi Arabia has made this much easier. British citizens can apply for a tourist eVisa online, flights to Jeddah and Madinah can be booked directly with airlines, and hotels in Makkah and Madinah are listed on the usual booking sites.

A typical DIY trip involves:

  • Applying for a visa that allows Umrah, and checking it is valid for your dates.
  • Booking return flights from a UK airport.
  • Booking separate hotels in Makkah and Madinah.
  • Arranging transport from the airport, between the two cities and back again.
  • Registering on the official Nusuk platform for permits, such as the Rawdah visit in Madinah.

Our guide to getting an Umrah visa from the UK explains the visa side in more detail.

What are the advantages of arranging Umrah yourself?

There are real benefits to going it alone, and we would rather be honest about them.

  • Full control: you choose the exact flights, hotels and number of nights in each city.
  • Flexibility: you can mix and match, for example a long stay in Madinah and a short one in Makkah.
  • Possible savings: if you travel light, book early and are happy with indirect flights, you can sometimes find a good price.
  • Using points or offers: airline miles and hotel loyalty schemes are easier to use when you book directly.

For an experienced traveller who has done Umrah before and knows the area around the Haram, DIY can be a perfectly good choice.

What are the downsides of a DIY Umrah?

The risks are mostly about time, stress and what happens when plans change.

  • Many separate bookings: if your flight is delayed or cancelled, your hotel and transfer bookings do not move automatically.
  • Price comparison is harder than it looks: a hotel that looks cheap online may be further from the Haram than its name suggests, or may not include breakfast.
  • Peak periods: in Ramadan and school holidays, rooms near the Haram can sell out early or rise sharply in price.
  • Rule changes: visa, permit and entry rules can change, and it is up to you to keep track.
  • No one to call: if something goes wrong at 2am in Makkah, you will be sorting it out yourself.

For families with young children or elderly parents, these issues tend to matter more, because a small problem can turn into a long, tiring day.

What are the advantages of an Umrah package?

A package bundles flights, visa, hotels and transfers into one booking. The main benefits are simplicity and support.

  • One booking, one contact: you deal with one team for the whole trip.
  • Visa handled for you: the agent submits the application and tells you what documents are needed.
  • Transfers included: a driver meets you at the airport and takes you between cities.
  • Local knowledge: a good agent knows which hotels are genuinely close to the Haram and which suit elderly pilgrims.
  • Help with changes: if flights are rescheduled, the agent can adjust hotels and transfers.

Packages also make costs clearer at the start. For example, our 3 star Umrah packages start from £490 per person for 7 nights, and our 4 star packages from £690. Prices depend on dates and are confirmed in your quote, and Ramadan and school holidays cost more.

What are the downsides of a package?

Packages are not perfect either.

  • Less flexibility: set nights in each city and set hotel options may not match exactly what you want.
  • Quality varies between agents: two packages with the same star rating can be very different in hotel location and flight times.
  • Hidden extras: some quotes look cheap until you add transfers, meals or a better room.
  • Choosing the wrong agent: the whole trip depends on one company, so it matters that they are reliable.

Many of these issues can be avoided by asking the right questions before you pay, which is the most important part of this article.

What should you check before paying any Umrah agent?

Whether you book with us or anyone else, ask for the following in writing before handing over money:

  1. Hotel names in both cities, not just "4 star hotel in Makkah", plus the number of nights in each.
  2. Distance to the Haram and whether a shuttle is needed. Our guide to choosing Umrah hotels explains what to look for.
  3. Room sharing: is the price for a double, triple or quad room?
  4. Flight details: airline, departure airport, direct or indirect, and the baggage allowance.
  5. Transfers: private car or shared coach, and which journeys are covered.
  6. What is not included, such as meals, Ziyarat tours or Zamzam allowance.
  7. Payment schedule: how much deposit, when the balance is due, and how you can pay.
  8. Cancellation and refund terms: what happens if you cancel, or if the agent or airline cancels.
  9. Company details: a full business address, landline and email, not just a mobile number.

A trustworthy agent will answer all of these without hesitation. If the answers are vague, take that as a warning sign. You can read our own booking terms to see the kind of detail you should expect.

How is your money protected?

This is worth asking about, whatever you book. Before paying, ask the agent clearly how your money is protected if the company or the airline fails, and get the answer in writing. Different arrangements apply to flight-inclusive packages, flight-only bookings and hotel-only bookings, so the answer may not be the same for every part of your trip.

It is also worth checking with your card provider how paying by card could help if something goes wrong, and taking out travel insurance as soon as you book, rather than just before you fly. Never pay by bank transfer to a personal account. Be wary of prices that are far below everyone else's, offers that "end today", or pressure to pay in cash.

So which should you choose?

As a rough guide:

  • DIY suits: experienced pilgrims, solo travellers or couples with flexible dates, and people comfortable sorting out problems abroad.
  • A package suits: first-timers, families, elderly parents, groups and anyone travelling in Ramadan or school holidays.

Some people do both over the years: a package for their first Umrah, and a DIY trip later once they know the cities. The cost difference is often smaller than expected once everything is added up. Our article on how much Umrah costs from the UK breaks down the main costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to do Umrah without an agent?

Sometimes, especially for flexible travellers who book early and travel outside peak times. In Ramadan and school holidays, packages are often similar or better value, because agents secure rooms and seats in advance.

Can British citizens arrange Umrah themselves?

Yes. British citizens can apply for a visa online and book flights and hotels directly. Rules can change, so check the current visa conditions before booking anything.

What should be included in an Umrah package?

Usually return flights, the visa, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, and transfers. Meals, Ziyarat and room upgrades vary, so check the written quote.

How do I know if an Umrah agent is genuine?

Ask for full company details, hotel names, written terms and an explanation of how your money is protected. Avoid agents who only take cash or bank transfers to personal accounts.

Is a package better for a first Umrah?

For most first-timers, yes. Having the visa, transfers and hotels arranged leaves you free to focus on worship rather than logistics.
