Quick answer: A group Umrah gives you a scholar or guide, set dates and company, and is often good value for first-timers and those who want everything organised. A private or tailor-made package lets you choose your own dates, hotels and pace, which suits families, couples and experienced pilgrims. Neither is better for everyone, so it comes down to how much guidance and flexibility you want.

What is a group Umrah?

A group Umrah is a package where a number of pilgrims travel together on the same dates, usually on the same flights, staying in the same hotels and following a shared programme. Groups are often led by a guide or scholar who explains the rituals, leads the group through Umrah, and organises Ziyarat in Makkah and Madinah.

Groups vary a lot. Some are small and close-knit, perhaps from one mosque or community. Others are larger, with several coaches. Some include talks and classes every day, while others give you more free time once Umrah is done.

What is a private or tailor-made Umrah?

A private package is built around you. You choose the departure airport, dates, length of stay, hotels and the order of cities. You perform Umrah on your own or with your family, and you can add guided Ziyarat or a private transfer if you wish.

For most UK pilgrims, this is what a standard Umrah package from a travel agent looks like: flights, visa, hotels and transfers, arranged for your party only. You set your own daily routine once you arrive. Our guide to package vs DIY Umrah covers how this compares with booking everything yourself.

What are the pros and cons of group Umrah?

Advantages:

  • Guidance throughout. Having someone lead you through ihram, tawaf and sa'i is reassuring, especially on a first Umrah.
  • Learning. Talks before and during the trip can deepen your understanding of what you are doing and why.
  • Company and support. You are never alone, which helps solo travellers, older pilgrims and anyone nervous about crowds.
  • Organised Ziyarat. Visits to historic sites are usually built into the programme.
  • Simplicity. Decisions are made for you, so you can focus on worship.

Disadvantages:

  • Fixed dates. You travel when the group travels, which may not fit school terms or work leave.
  • Less choice of hotel. Everyone usually stays in the same hotels.
  • Shared pace. The group moves at the pace of the slowest member, and schedules can involve waiting around.
  • Room sharing. Some group prices assume three or four sharing, so a private room costs more.
  • Quality depends on the leader. A great guide makes the trip. A disorganised one can make it stressful.

What are the pros and cons of a private Umrah?

Advantages:

  • Your dates. Travel in half term, around a wedding, or whenever suits you.
  • Your hotels. Choose a hotel right by the Haram, or save money with one further out.
  • Your pace. Rest when you need to, which is often essential with young children or elderly parents.
  • Privacy. Ideal for couples and families who want time together.
  • Flexible length. Stay 7, 10 or 14 nights, or split the nights between cities as you like.

Disadvantages:

  • No guide by default. You need to learn the rituals yourself or book a guide separately.
  • More decisions. Choosing dates, hotels and extras takes time.
  • Less company. Solo travellers in particular may miss the support of a group.

Families often find a private package easier to manage. Our guide to Umrah with family, children and elderly parents has more on planning around different needs.

Is group Umrah cheaper than private Umrah?

Not always. Groups can secure good rates by booking flights and rooms in bulk, and sharing a room brings the per-person price down. But a private package in a 3 star hotel at a quiet time of year can be just as affordable, or cheaper, than a group trip in a busier season.

As a guide, our packages start from £490 per person for 7 nights in 3 star hotels, £690 for 7 nights in 4 star and £1,230 for 7 nights in 5 star. Prices depend on your dates and are confirmed in your quote, and Ramadan and school holidays cost more. Our article on how much Umrah costs from the UK breaks down what drives the price.

When comparing, make sure you compare like with like: the same hotels, the same number of nights and the same room sharing.

Who should choose a group Umrah?

Group Umrah tends to suit:

  • First-time pilgrims who want to be guided step by step.
  • Solo travellers who would like company and support. Our guide to travelling for Umrah alone covers both options.
  • Mosque and community groups who want to travel together.
  • Friends or extended families booking several rooms at once.

If you are organising a trip for your own group, our group Umrah packages can be arranged around your dates, numbers and budget.

Who should choose a private Umrah?

A private or tailor-made package is usually the better fit for:

  • Families with children, who need to fit around school holidays and nap times.
  • Couples, especially newlyweds wanting privacy. See our guide to Umrah for couples.
  • Elderly or less mobile pilgrims, who need a hotel close to the Haram and a gentle pace.
  • Experienced pilgrims who know the rituals and want to spend their time their own way.

What questions should you ask before booking?

Whichever you choose, ask these before you pay a deposit:

  1. Which exact hotels are included, and how far are they from the Haram?
  2. How many people share a room, and what does a private room cost?
  3. Are flights direct or indirect, and from which UK airport?
  4. Are the visa, transfers and Ziyarat included?
  5. For groups: who leads the group, how many are travelling, and what is the daily programme?
  6. For private trips: can I add a guide for Umrah or Ziyarat if I want one?
  7. What happens if dates change, and what are the cancellation terms?
  8. Who do I contact in Saudi Arabia if something goes wrong?

If you are still unsure which suits you, tell us who is travelling and when, and our team will suggest both options so you can compare. You can contact us here.

Frequently asked questions

Is group Umrah good for first-timers?

Yes, it is often a good choice. A guide takes you through each ritual and you have company if you feel overwhelmed by the crowds.

Can I join a group but stay in a better hotel?

Sometimes. Some groups allow upgrades, but staying apart can make it harder to follow the programme, so ask before booking.

Can I have a guide on a private Umrah?

Yes. A private guide for Umrah or Ziyarat can often be added. Ask when you request your quote.

How big are Umrah groups?

It varies widely, from a handful of families to large groups with several coaches. Ask for the expected numbers so you know what to expect.

Is a private package more expensive?

Not necessarily. Price depends mainly on dates, hotels and room sharing, so a well-timed private trip can cost the same as or less than a group.
