Quick answer: Choose your Makkah hotel by walking time to the Haram first and star rating second, because distance shapes your whole trip. Families and elderly pilgrims usually do best within a few minutes' walk, such as the Clock Tower or Jabal Omar area, while budget travellers can save by staying a little further out or mixing star ratings between the two cities. In Madinah most good hotels are close to Masjid an-Nabawi, so you can often spend less there.
Your hotel decides how often you can pray in the mosque, how tired you get and how much you spend on taxis. Below we explain what really matters, the main areas in each city, and how to balance comfort with budget. You can compare individual properties in our Umrah hotels guide.
How far should my hotel be from the Haram?
As close as your budget allows, especially in Makkah. You will make the journey several times a day, often in heat and crowds. As a rough guide:
- Front-row hotels: a few minutes' walk to the mosque's outer courtyard.
- Second-row and nearby hotels: roughly 5 to 10 minutes on foot.
- Further areas: 15 minutes or more on foot, or a hotel shuttle bus.
Remember that reaching the courtyard is not the same as reaching your place of prayer. At busy times it can take another 10 to 20 minutes to get inside, through the crowds and up to the Mataf. Always ask for the distance in walking minutes, and ask whether the route is flat or uphill.
Which areas of Makkah are best for Umrah hotels?
The main hotel areas around Masjid al-Haram are:
- Abraj Al Bait (the Clock Tower complex): directly opposite the mosque, with shopping and food on the lower floors. Hotels here include Swissotel Makkah, the Makkah Clock Royal Tower (Fairmont) and Raffles Makkah Palace. Ideal for elderly pilgrims and short stays.
- Ajyad: beside the Clock Tower area, with a mix of 4 and 5 star hotels such as Elaf Ajyad.
- Jabal Omar: a modern district a short walk west of the Haram, home to hotels such as Hilton Suites Jabal Omar.
- Ibrahim Al Khalil Road and Misfalah: further south, with more 3 and 4 star options and lower prices.
- Outer districts such as Aziziyah: much cheaper, but you will rely on shuttles or taxis, which can be slow around prayer times.

Which areas of Madinah are best?
Madinah is easier. Most hotels used for Umrah packages are in the central area around Masjid an-Nabawi, and many are a short walk from its gates. The mosque is surrounded by large open courtyards with shade umbrellas, so even a hotel a few minutes away is comfortable to reach.
Because of this, many pilgrims save money by choosing a 3 or 4 star hotel in Madinah and putting more of their budget into Makkah. If you want the very closest options, hotels such as The Oberoi Madinah, Anwar Al Madinah and Dar Al Taqwa are popular 5 star choices. One thing to check: women's and men's sections are entered through different gates, so ask which side of the mosque the hotel faces.
What do the star ratings mean for Umrah hotels?
Star ratings describe facilities, not location. A 3 star hotel close to the Haram may suit you better than a 5 star hotel with a long shuttle ride. In general:
- 3 star: clean, simple rooms; often a short walk or shuttle ride away; meals may not be included.
- 4 star: more comfort, better lifts and often breakfast; usually closer to the Haram.
- 5 star: the closest locations, large lobbies, buffets and better service, with prices to match.
Our 5 star Umrah hotels page shows the properties right next to the Haram, alongside 4 and 3 star options.
Is a Haram view or Kaaba view room worth it?
It depends on your priorities. A room with a view of the Kaaba lets you watch Tawaf and, in some hotels, follow the prayer from your window when you are tired or unwell. It is a special experience, but it adds significantly to the price.
Be clear about the terms: a "Haram view" may show part of the mosque, while a "Kaaba view" faces the Kaaba itself. City view rooms in the same hotel cost much less and still give you the same short walk. If you book a view room, make sure it is confirmed in writing in your quote.
Which hotels are best for families and elderly pilgrims?
For elderly parents, distance matters more than anything. Choose a hotel within a few minutes' walk, ideally with level access and no steep slopes. Ask us to arrange wheelchair assistance where needed; our Umrah packages for elderly pilgrims are built around close hotels.
For families, check:
- Whether triple, quad or connecting rooms are available.
- Whether breakfast or half board is included, which saves time and money with children.
- How busy the lifts get. In tall towers, lifts can be slow just before and after each prayer, so a lower floor can be more practical.
- Hotel check-in times. Saudi hotels often have afternoon check-in, which matters if you land early.
Our family Umrah packages include room options for larger groups.
How can I choose a hotel on a budget?
There are several sensible ways to save without making the trip difficult:
- Mix star ratings: 4 or 5 star in Makkah and 3 star in Madinah.
- Share a room: quad and triple sharing cost less per person.
- Travel outside peak dates: Ramadan and UK school holidays push hotel prices up sharply.
- Choose room only: food courts near both mosques are good value.
- Pick a shuttle hotel carefully: confirm that the shuttle runs at all prayer times, including Fajr.
As a guide, our packages start from £490 per person for 7 nights with 3 star hotels, £690 with 4 star hotels and £1,230 with 5 star hotels, sharing a room. Longer stays are available, such as 10 nights 4 star from £850 or 14 nights 5 star from £1,850. Prices depend on dates and are confirmed in your quote. Our guide to how much Umrah costs from the UK explains what moves the price.
What questions should I ask before booking?
- How many minutes is the walk to the nearest mosque gate?
- Is the route flat, and is it suitable for a wheelchair?
- Are meals included, and which ones?
- What type of room is it, and what view?
- If there is a shuttle, how often does it run, and does it run at Fajr?
- What are check-in and check-out times, and can bags be stored?
- How many nights are in each city, and in what order?
Getting these answers in writing avoids surprises. Our common Umrah mistakes article covers other planning pitfalls.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay longer in Makkah or Madinah?
Many pilgrims spend slightly more time in Makkah, where Umrah is performed, but Madinah is calmer and many love it. A split such as four nights in Makkah and three in Madinah works well for a 7 night trip.
Do hotels in Makkah include meals?
Some do and some do not. Many 4 and 5 star hotels include breakfast, while 3 star packages are often room only. Your quote states exactly what is included.
Are hotels in the Clock Tower worth the extra cost?
For elderly pilgrims, short stays and Ramadan, the closeness is often worth it. For younger, fit travellers on a budget, a hotel slightly further away can be a sensible saving.
Can I pray in the hotel if the mosque is full?
Scholars differ on following the imam from a hotel room, so ask a scholar you trust. It is better to plan to go to the mosque early, especially on Fridays and in Ramadan.
Which Madinah hotels are closest to Masjid an-Nabawi?
Many hotels in the central area are a short walk from the gates, including 5 star options like The Oberoi Madinah and Anwar Al Madinah. We can confirm walking times for any hotel in your quote.
