Quick answer: The most common Umrah mistakes are crossing the Miqat without Ihram, walking through the Hijr Ismail during Tawaf, starting Sa'i at the wrong hill or miscounting laps, and cutting too little hair at the end. On the practical side, first-timers often leave visas and Rawdah permits too late, underestimate the walking and heat, and pick hotels on price alone. Nearly all of these are easy to avoid with a little preparation.

Making a mistake does not mean your Umrah is ruined, and most errors can be put right. But knowing them in advance saves stress on the day. We have grouped them into religious mistakes, which affect the rites, and practical ones, which affect your comfort and safety.

What mistakes do people make with Ihram?

  • Crossing the Miqat without making the intention. On flights to Jeddah the Miqat is crossed in the air. Change before boarding or on the plane, and make your intention when the crew announce the Miqat. If you land at Jeddah without Ihram, ask a scholar what to do rather than guessing.
  • Thinking the white sheets alone mean you are in Ihram. The restrictions start with the intention, not with the clothes.
  • Using scented products. Hand wipes on the plane, hotel soap and fragranced deodorant are easy to use without thinking.
  • Women wearing a niqab or gloves, or believing they must wear white. Women wear normal modest clothes in any colour.

We explain all of this in detail in our guide to Ihram rules for men and women, including what to do if you break a rule by mistake.

What are the most common Tawaf mistakes?

  • Walking through the Hijr Ismail. The low semicircular wall beside the Kaaba encloses an area that is part of the Kaaba. A circuit that passes inside it does not count, so always walk outside the wall.
  • Starting from the wrong place. Each circuit begins and ends in line with the Black Stone. Starting a few metres late means that circuit is incomplete.
  • Losing count. Use a counter or a tasbih, and if you are unsure whether you did six or seven, scholars advise building on the lower number.
  • Doing Tawaf without wudu. Most scholars require wudu for Tawaf. If it breaks, go out, renew it and ask a scholar whether to restart or continue.
  • Keeping the right shoulder uncovered the whole time. Men uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) only during the Tawaf of Umrah. Cover it again before praying the two rak'ahs and in every other prayer.
  • Pushing to kiss the Black Stone. Kissing it is Sunnah, but harming others is not allowed. Pointing towards it from a distance is enough.

What mistakes do people make in Sa'i?

  • Starting at Marwah. Sa'i always starts at Safa and ends at Marwah.
  • Counting a round trip as one lap. Safa to Marwah is one lap, and Marwah back to Safa is the second. Seven laps finish at Marwah.
  • Women jogging between the green lights. The light jog is for men only.
  • Worrying about wudu. Wudu is recommended for Sa'i but not a condition according to most scholars, so there is no need to restart if it breaks.

What mistakes do people make with duas and the hair cut?

Many pilgrims believe there is a compulsory dua for each round of Tawaf and get anxious when they cannot read one. There is not. The specific words to learn are short, and personal dua in any language is fine. Our guide to Umrah duas and the Talbiyah lists the well-known wording with meanings.

At the end, some men snip a few hairs from one side. Most scholars say a man should shave the whole head or shorten the hair evenly from all over the head; schools differ on the minimum, so if in doubt, shave. Women cut about a fingertip's length from the end of their hair, preferably in private, and should not go to a barber's shop.

Another common slip is removing Ihram before cutting the hair, for example changing clothes in the hotel first. Cut or shave first, then change.

What practical mistakes do first-time UK pilgrims make before travelling?

  • Leaving the visa too late. Allow at least two to three weeks, and longer before Ramadan. Our guide to the Umrah visa from the UK explains the options.
  • Not checking the passport. It should be valid for at least six months from your date of entry, with blank pages.
  • Booking dates around Hajj. Umrah visas usually pause for a few weeks around Hajj.
  • Not setting up Nusuk. Install the official Nusuk app and register before you leave, so you can book the Rawdah permit for Madinah. Slots go quickly in busy periods.
  • Skipping travel insurance, particularly for elderly parents or anyone with a medical condition.
  • Packing new shoes. Wear your sandals in at home; blisters on the first day make the rest of the trip hard.

What mistakes do people make once they arrive?

  • Doing Umrah exhausted. After an overnight flight and the transfer, many people go straight to the Haram. If you or an elderly parent are worn out, rest for a few hours in Ihram first. The rites take three to six hours and require a lot of walking.
  • Going at the worst time. Midday in the hot months and the hour around Friday prayer are the hardest. Late night or after Fajr is often calmer.
  • Getting separated. Agree a fixed meeting point with your group, such as a numbered gate. Gates are numbered and named, so note yours on your phone.
  • Losing shoes. Carry them in a shoe bag rather than leaving them at the door.
  • Not drinking enough. Zamzam is free throughout both mosques. Drink regularly, especially in the summer months.
  • Overspending on mobile roaming. Check your UK network's roaming charges, or buy a Saudi SIM or eSIM on arrival.

What mistakes do people make when choosing hotels and packages?

The biggest one is choosing on price alone. A cheaper hotel further from the Haram can mean long walks five times a day, waiting for shuttle buses, or paying for taxis. For elderly pilgrims, that distance can decide how many prayers they manage in the mosque.

  • Ask how far the hotel is in walking minutes, not just in metres.
  • Check whether meals are included and whether a shuttle runs at all prayer times.
  • Get any Haram-view or Kaaba-view room promised in writing.
  • Compare like with like: the same hotels, nights, room sharing and flights.

Our guide to choosing hotels in Makkah and Madinah walks through the areas, star ratings and walking times.

Is my Umrah invalid if I made a mistake?

Usually not. Many mistakes, such as forgetting a dua or a Sunnah act, do not affect validity at all. Others, such as an incomplete circuit, can be corrected by adding a circuit while you are still there. A few, such as crossing the Miqat without Ihram, may need an expiation.

The key is to ask early. Note what happened, and ask a qualified scholar while you are still in Makkah, when it is easiest to put things right.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I walk through the Hijr Ismail during Tawaf?

That circuit does not count, because the Hijr is part of the Kaaba. If you realise during Tawaf, simply add another circuit outside the wall.

I lost count during Tawaf. What should I do?

Take the lower number you are sure of and continue from there. For example, if you are unsure between five and six, count it as five.

Can I do Umrah straight after landing?

Yes, many pilgrims do, and there is no requirement to wait. If you are very tired, though, it is perfectly fine to rest in Ihram at the hotel first and go once you are refreshed.

Do women have to cut their hair at a barber's?

No. Women cut about a fingertip's length from the end of their hair themselves, or a mahram or another woman can do it in private.

Do I need to restart Sa'i if I lose wudu?

According to most scholars, no. Wudu is recommended for Sa'i but not required, so you can carry on.
