Quick answer: Zamzam is the blessed well in Makkah that began when water sprang up for Hajar and her baby Ismail. Pilgrims drink it freely from coolers throughout Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi, ideally facing the Qiblah, saying Bismillah and making dua. To bring it home to the UK, most airlines allow one sealed 5-litre bottle bought at the airport in Saudi Arabia, but rules vary, so check with your airline before you fly.
For many pilgrims, the first cup of cold Zamzam after Tawaf is a moment they never forget. It is also the gift that families back home ask for most. This guide covers the story behind the well, the Sunnah etiquette, where to find it, and the practical side of carrying it back to Britain.
What is the history of Zamzam water?
The story begins with Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, who by Allah's command left his wife Hajar and their infant son Ismail in the dry, empty valley of Makkah. When their water ran out and the baby cried with thirst, Hajar ran back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, searching for help.
Allah then caused water to burst from the ground near Ismail. Hajar is said to have gathered the water and held it in with sand and stones, and the name Zamzam is often linked to this idea of containing or gathering water. The spring drew travellers and tribes, and the city of Makkah grew around it.
Every pilgrim re-lives this story. The Sa'i between Safa and Marwah in Umrah follows Hajar's footsteps, and drinking Zamzam after Tawaf connects you with the water that answered her trust in Allah. Our step-by-step guide to Umrah shows where each of these moments fits in the rites.
What did the Prophet ﷺ say about Zamzam?
Several well-known hadith speak about Zamzam:
- "Zamzam water is for whatever it is drunk for" (Ibn Majah and Ahmad). Scholars understand this as encouragement to drink it with a sincere intention and dua.
- The Prophet ﷺ described it as blessed and as "food that nourishes" (Muslim).
- He ﷺ drank from Zamzam during his Hajj (Bukhari and Muslim).
Because of these narrations, pilgrims drink it with intention: for forgiveness, for healing, for beneficial knowledge, or for a specific need in their life.
What is the dua for drinking Zamzam?
There is no single dua that must be said. You may ask Allah for anything good, in any language. A dua commonly recited, reported from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, is:
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan wasi'an, wa shifa'an min kulli da'.
Meaning: "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every illness."
Many pilgrims prepare a short list of personal duas before travelling, so they are ready when they drink. You will find more supplications in our guide to Umrah duas and the Talbiyah.
How should you drink Zamzam? The etiquette
Scholars mention these recommended practices:
- Make an intention for what you hope to gain from it.
- Face the Qiblah where possible.
- Say Bismillah before drinking.
- Drink in three breaths, pausing between sips, rather than in one gulp.
- Drink your fill. Scholars mention drinking plenty of it as a sign of love for it.
- Say Alhamdulillah afterwards and make dua.
Drinking sitting down is the general Sunnah for water, but the Prophet ﷺ drank Zamzam standing (Bukhari), so either is fine. Some people also pour a little over their head or face, which some companions are reported to have done.
Please do not waste it. Avoid leaving half-full cups on the floor, which also becomes a slipping hazard in a crowded mosque. A light, refillable bottle is one of the small items on our Umrah packing list for exactly this reason.
Where can you get Zamzam water in the Haram?
You no longer see the well itself. It lies beneath the Mataf, the area around the Kaaba, and the water is pumped, filtered and supplied throughout the mosque. In practice:
- Coolers and dispensers are placed along walls, near pillars and in the Mataf on every level, with disposable cups beside them.
- Cold and room-temperature options are usually labelled. If you have a sore throat, which is common on Umrah, the not-cold water is kinder.
- Taps and fountains are found near some entrances and in the Mas'a, the Sa'i area, so you can drink between laps.
- Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah also serves Zamzam from coolers across the mosque and courtyards.
Carry a small reusable bottle so you can fill up and keep drinking throughout the day. Staying hydrated is one of the most useful Umrah health tips we can give, especially in the warmer months.
How can I bring Zamzam water back to the UK?
This is the question families ask us most. The general position is:
- Buy a sealed bottle at the airport. Official 5-litre bottles of Zamzam are usually sold at Jeddah and Madinah airports, typically near check-in. Buying it there means the bottle is properly packed and sealed.
- Most airlines allow one 5-litre bottle per passenger. Some carry it in addition to your normal checked allowance, others count it within your allowance, and some may charge. It is normally checked in, not carried in the cabin.
- Do not pack it in your suitcase. Airlines and airports generally do not accept Zamzam in home-filled containers or inside checked bags, and it may be removed at security.
- Cabin liquid limits apply. A full water bottle will not pass security in hand luggage.
Rules differ by airline and can change, so check the latest Zamzam policy with your airline before you travel. If you book a package with us, we confirm this when you book. Children with their own seat may also have an allowance, which helps larger families.
Once home, store it in a clean, cool place. Many people decant it into smaller bottles to share with relatives and neighbours, which is a lovely tradition. Our Umrah shopping and gift guide has more ideas for presents to bring back.
Can you buy Zamzam water in the UK?
You may see bottles labelled "Zamzam" for sale in the UK. Their authenticity can be very hard to verify, and some may not be genuine or may not have been stored properly. If Zamzam matters to you, the most reliable route is to bring a sealed bottle home yourself, or ask a friend or relative travelling for Umrah to bring one.
Is Zamzam water safe to drink?
Zamzam in the two Haram mosques is supplied through a managed system, and millions of pilgrims drink it every year. If you have a specific medical condition, such as kidney problems or a fluid restriction, follow your doctor's advice on how much water you drink overall, including Zamzam.

Frequently asked questions
How much Zamzam can I bring back on the plane?
Most airlines allow one sealed 5-litre bottle per passenger, bought at the airport in Saudi Arabia. Some include it in your checked allowance and some charge, so always check your airline's current policy.
Can I fill my own bottles with Zamzam and pack them?
Generally no. Airlines and airport security usually refuse home-filled containers and Zamzam packed inside suitcases. Buy the sealed airport bottle instead.
Is there a fixed dua for Zamzam?
No, you can ask Allah for anything good. Many people recite the dua reported from Ibn Abbas asking for beneficial knowledge, wide provision and healing from every illness.
Can I drink Zamzam standing up?
Yes. Although sitting is the general Sunnah for drinking water, the Prophet ﷺ drank Zamzam standing, as reported in Bukhari, so either way is fine.
Is Zamzam available in Madinah?
Yes. Masjid an-Nabawi has Zamzam coolers throughout the prayer halls and courtyards, so you can keep drinking it during your stay in Madinah.
