## Flights from the UK to Hyderabad

Direct flights run from London Heathrow to Hyderabad; one-stop flights connect via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah or Istanbul.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport serves Hyderabad and Telangana, home to a large Muslim community with close family ties in the UK.

## Flying into Rajiv Gandhi International (HYD)

Hyderabad's airport is at Shamshabad, around 25 to 30 km south of the city. It is a single, well-organised terminal, so arrivals are usually smooth, but it is a fair drive into town. The PV Narasimha Rao Expressway runs from the airport to Mehdipatnam and is the quickest route to the Old City and the central areas.

## UK airports and typical routings

British Airways has long flown direct from London Heathrow to Hyderabad, taking around 10 hours; schedules change, so we check for your dates. From Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and other UK airports, the usual routings go via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, at around 12 to 16 hours in total. Gulf connections into Hyderabad are frequent, which reflects the city's strong links with the Gulf and the UK.

## Getting from the airport to the city

The Old City, around the Charminar and Mecca Masjid, is usually around 40 to 60 minutes away by car. Banjara Hills, Mehdipatnam and Tolichowki are a similar distance. HITEC City and Gachibowli, on the western side, are usually around 45 minutes to an hour away. Airport cabs and ride-hailing apps work well, but if you have a lot of luggage, a pre-booked car is easier. Families arriving for a wedding with several suitcases may need a larger vehicle, so mention this when you book.

## When UK travellers fly to Hyderabad

Hyderabadi families in the UK travel home most often in the cooler months from October to February, when many weddings take place, and over Christmas. Eid and the summer holidays are busy too. April and May are very hot, and the monsoon arrives from around June to September.

## Local tips

- **Hyderabad, India or Hyderabad, Sindh?** There are two cities called Hyderabad. This page is for Hyderabad in India (HYD). For Hyderabad in Sindh, Pakistan, you would fly to Karachi and drive for around 2 to 3 hours. Double-check the airport code before you book anything.
- **Ramadan nights:** if you are travelling in Ramadan, the streets around the Charminar are crowded late into the night. Plan your airport journey with this in mind if you are staying in the Old City.
