A practical guide to Umrah flights from the UK: direct vs one-stop, Jeddah or Madinah first, Ihram on the plane, baggage, Zamzam and when to book.

**Quick answer:** Most UK pilgrims fly into Jeddah, either direct from London Heathrow in about 6 to 6.5 hours or with one stop via the Gulf or Istanbul from regional airports. If you fly to Jeddah you must be in Ihram before the plane passes the Miqat, while flying into Madinah first lets you put on Ihram later on the road to Makkah. Book early for Ramadan and school holidays, when seats sell out and fares rise.

## Can you fly direct from the UK for Umrah?

Yes. London Heathrow has direct flights to Jeddah, taking around 6 to 6.5 hours. Direct flights are the simplest option, especially for elderly parents and families with young children, because there is no connection to manage and no risk of a missed transfer.

From regional airports such as Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow or Leeds Bradford, most Umrah journeys involve one stop. These usually connect through a Gulf hub or Istanbul, and the total journey time depends heavily on the layover. A well-timed connection of two to three hours can be almost as easy as a direct flight, while a long overnight wait is tiring.

## Direct or one-stop: which is better for Umrah?

Each has its advantages, and the right answer depends on where you live and who is travelling.

- **Direct flights** are faster and simpler, and you only deal with one airline for baggage and Zamzam. They can cost more, and you may need to travel to London first.
- **One-stop flights** often leave from an airport closer to home, which saves a long drive or train journey to Heathrow. Fares can be competitive, and the break can suit people who struggle with sitting still for long periods.
- **Connection risk:** on one-stop routes, check the layover time and make sure everything is on a single booking so your bags are checked through and the airline rebooks you if the first flight is late.

Pilgrims in the south often prefer our [Umrah packages from London](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/umrah-packages-from-london/) for the direct option.

In the North West, many families choose [Umrah packages from Manchester](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/umrah-packages-from-manchester/) to avoid the trip down south.

## Should you fly into Jeddah or Madinah first?

You have two main choices. The first is to fly into Jeddah, go to Makkah for Umrah, then travel to Madinah and fly home from Madinah or back through Jeddah. The second is to land in Madinah, spend your first few days there, then travel to Makkah for Umrah.

An "open-jaw" ticket, where you fly into one city and out of the other, saves you a long road journey back to the airport you arrived at. For example, you can arrive in Jeddah and fly home from Madinah, or the reverse.

- **Jeddah first** lets you perform Umrah at the start of your trip, while your energy is high. You must be in Ihram on the plane. Compare routes on our [flights to Jeddah](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/flights-to-jeddah/) page.
- **Madinah first** means no Ihram on the flight. You rest in Madinah, then put on Ihram at the Miqat of Dhul Hulayfah on the way to Makkah. Madinah airport is only about 25 to 40 minutes from Masjid an-Nabawi. See our [flights to Madinah](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/flights-to-madinah/) for options.

Flights into Madinah are fewer, so availability can be tighter in busy seasons. We check both options when you request a quote.

## How do you put on Ihram on the plane?

If you are flying into Jeddah to go straight to Makkah, you will cross the Miqat while in the air. According to the mainstream view, you must enter Ihram before you pass that point, so you cannot wait until you land in Jeddah. A minority of scholars hold a different view about Jeddah, so ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.

Here is what most UK pilgrims do:

- **At home or at the airport:** take a shower, trim nails, and men change into the two Ihram sheets. Women wear their normal modest clothing. Do not make the intention yet.
- **On board:** the crew usually make an announcement shortly before the plane reaches the Miqat. Some airlines also show it on the screen.
- **At the announcement:** make your intention for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah. From this moment the Ihram restrictions apply.

Changing in an aircraft toilet is very difficult, so we strongly suggest men change before boarding. On one-stop routes, many people change at the connecting airport. Keep a small bag with your Ihram, a belt pouch and unscented toiletries in your hand luggage. Our guide to [Ihram rules for men and women](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/blog/ihram-rules-men-and-women/) covers what is and is not allowed.

## What baggage allowance do you get, and can you bring Zamzam home?

Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare type, so always check your ticket rather than assuming. Most economy fares to Saudi Arabia include checked luggage, often in one or two pieces, plus a cabin bag. We confirm the allowance on your booking.

For Zamzam, airlines flying out of Jeddah and Madinah have usually allowed one sealed carton of Zamzam per passenger, bought at or near the airport, sometimes on top of the normal allowance. The rules change from time to time and differ by airline, so check before you fly home. Zamzam is generally not allowed in the cabin. Our [Zamzam water guide](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/blog/zamzam-water-guide/) explains how to buy it and carry it safely.

Packing light on the way out leaves room for gifts, dates and prayer mats on the way back. Our [Umrah packing list](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/blog/umrah-packing-list/) helps you avoid carrying things you will not use.

## When should you book Umrah flights from the UK?

Timing your booking matters as much as the airline you choose.

- **Ramadan:** book as early as possible, ideally several months ahead. The last ten nights are the hardest dates to secure, and fares rise sharply as the month approaches.
- **School holidays:** Easter, summer, Christmas and half term are busy with families. Booking early gives you a wider choice of flights and hotels.
- **Quieter months:** outside these peaks, flights are easier to find and often cheaper, although booking a few months ahead is still sensible.
- **Around Hajj:** Umrah visas usually pause around the Hajj season, so check the dates before planning a trip in that period.

Families planning around term dates will find options on our [school holidays Umrah packages](https://umrahgateway.co.uk/school-holidays-umrah-packages/) page.

## Which seats and meals work best on an Umrah flight?

A few small choices make a real difference on a six-hour flight in Ihram.

- **Aisle seats** make it easier to get up for wudu and to stretch your legs, which matters for elderly pilgrims and anyone at risk of swelling or clots.
- **Sit together** as a family, and if you travel with an older parent, request wheelchair assistance when you book rather than at the airport.
- **Meals:** airlines flying to Saudi Arabia generally serve halal food. If you have dietary needs, such as diabetic or vegetarian meals, request them in advance.
- **Prayer on board:** you can pray in your seat if you cannot stand. Check prayer times for your route before you fly, and make wudu before boarding where you can, as space in the toilets is tight.
- **Stay hydrated:** cabin air is dry, and you will arrive into heat. Drink water regularly and avoid too much tea or coffee.

## What happens when you land?

After immigration and baggage collection in Jeddah, you travel to Makkah by road, which takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. Pre-booking your transfer avoids haggling at the airport while you are tired and in Ihram.
