Quick answer: For the lowest prices and fewer crowds, travel outside Ramadan and UK school holidays, for example in the months after Hajj. For the mildest weather, travel between November and February. For the greatest reward, travel in Ramadan, but expect higher prices and large crowds.
Weather in Makkah and Madinah
- November to February: the most comfortable time, with warm days and cooler evenings.
- March to May and September to October: hot, especially at midday.
- June to August: very hot, often above 40°C. Plan Tawaf and Sa'i for early morning or night.
Busy and quiet times
- Ramadan: the busiest and most expensive time, especially the last ten nights.
- UK school holidays (Easter, summer, Christmas and half terms): popular with families, so prices rise.
- After Hajj and in the early Islamic months: often quieter and better value.
- Around Hajj: Umrah visas are usually paused for a few weeks, so Umrah is not possible.
Ramadan Umrah
The Prophet ﷺ said that Umrah in Ramadan is equal in reward to Hajj. Many pilgrims wish to spend the last ten nights in Makkah to seek Laylat al-Qadr. Book as early as possible, as hotels near the Haram fill months ahead. Read our Ramadan Umrah guide.
Our advice
- First Umrah with children: school holidays, booked early.
- Elderly parents: winter months, with a hotel close to the Haram.
- Best value: quieter months outside holidays.
